ABOUT MEMORIAL DAY

Memorial Day is very late in May, typically a time warm enough to plant crops without risking frost. While the US was mainly an agricultural nation, this meant that school would end for the year so that kids could help with planting and harvesting. Also, late May is only about three weeks from the summer solstice, meaning that it is usually warm and summery. So, Memorial Day is said to be the unofficial kickoff to the summer.
Memorial Day, as the name implies, was established to create a day of remembrance to honor soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the U.S. Civil War. Our culture today, however, associates the holiday with the start of summer activities, like barbecues and going to the beach. Memorial Day is always on a Monday, which makes it always a long weekend.
